Top Girl! McTimoney Chiropractic update

Alison has completed all the documentation required for registration and started in practice at the beginning of February. She has been busy ever since working in Marlow. The GPs in Stokenchurch have also invited her to practice there commencing in early June. Not only did Alison achieve a First in her degree course but also she was awarded the top prize for clinical and practical excellence.

McTimoney Chiropractic is a low force technique that has been around for some 50 years and can treat many aspects of pain, not just backs. See www.mctimoney-chiropractic.org  .

Physician! Heal thyself (MkII) and case study

I’ve had to stop running due to injury, but I learnt something new. Sesamoiditis! It caught me very much by surprise at 4.00 am one morning. The pain woke me up and I wasn’t able to put my right foot to the ground. The problem lay right under the ball of the big toe where tendons of a small muscle attach to the smallest bones in the body. It took Alison and me about 90 minutes to work it out. Overuse or age? Impossible to tell. I’ve recovered rapidly by treating myself with arnica, ice, Theracane and Trigger Point Therapy. I’m back to running and missed out on the doctors’ waiting room scenario, too.

Product review - Theracane©

This oddly shaped tool for treating Trigger Points helped me out when I was treating my foot problem. Feet aren’t the easiest things in the world to reach yourself but with the ’cane it’s not a problem. It is designed to put and keep pressure on specific trouble spots to enable them to release the muscle from spasm. Designed as a self-treatment tool by someone who suffered multiple muscular problems it reaches parts that others can’t. Costs £55 and comes with easily understood instruction booklet.

Congratulations to all ‘my’ London Marathon runners, particularly KN who broke the three-hour barrier at 2 hours 54 minute

Your questions answered - 'How is McTimoney chiropractic different to other forms of chiropractic?

There are around 500 chiropractic techniques worldwide. About 20% of UK chiropractors are McTimoneys.

The technique is low force and involves adjustments rather than manipulation. The moves do not ‘gap’ joints, so there is little if any of the clicking associated with some techniques.

It’s also a whole body technique. This means that if you present with a neck problem, for example, the chiropractor will

still evaluate the rest of your spine and pelvis. This is important because the body works as a whole and develops compensatory mechanisms according to how we use it. It’s sometimes true that the area that is painful is not necessarily the cause of the problem, and so unless the whole body is assessed, there’s a risk of not resolving the problem long term.

Mctimoney is suitable for all ages and can be used for wellness care, to enhance and support ongoing health, as well as to tackle pain and discomfort.

New boy! The Bowen Technique

After two years of dithering over whether to train in this technique I finally took the plunge in February and have now completed the first two of seven modules. This allows me to practice the basic moves known as Basic Relaxation Moves. These three moves account for about 80% of all moves carried out by practitioners. Patients find Bowen a curious treatment at first because the therapist leaves the room for two or three minutes after a small series of moves, which are very light. This allows the body and brain to absorb and act on the information given to the particular area that has been worked on. As with many therapies there is little scientific evidence to say why Bowen should work. We believe that the body has its own rhythm and harmonics and our treatment engages these, allowing the body to readjust itself to whereit should be. So far I have had some good results particularly with knees. Any brave souls out there willing to lay down their bodies etc…. see box and look at www.bowtech.com .
